I remember coming in to the fly fishing scene as a young woman. They were the days before the internet, social media, and universal networking. Back then, we discovered each other through chance encounters and word of mouth. The more anglers I met, the more I heard about the illustrious Kathy Ruddick.

Kathy and her husband Malcolm owned and operated the iconic Ruddick’s Fly Shop. She was certified through the FFF (now FFI), could run circles around any man who gave her grief, and moved effortlessly among some of the most prominent figures in our industry at the time. She was a force of nature, and I was intrigued.

At long last, I had the opportunity to sit down with Kathy and learn more about her life—then and now. Honestly, I’m glad I waited until I had a few years under my belt before recording this episode. I had so many questions for her: as a woman, a professional, a straight shooter, and more.
