I met @jerrydarkes years ago (pre-Charles era, so

I met @jerrydarkes years ago (pre-Charles era, so at least 12 years ago). Together, we’d take whirlwind tours through the Midwest—teaching, fishing, and connecting with new friends. It had been a few years since our last hangout, so we were overdue for some time on the Great Lakes.

Our first stop was Lake St. Clair for musky. I had just finished filming our upcoming @Anchored_Outdoors class with @flyinspired and @rickkustich, and I was excited to put all my newfound knowledge to the test.

While musky fishing was tough, we managed to hook into some smallmouth and steelhead in one of the harbors (I fully admit those Great Lakes steelhead are even more impressive than I expected!)

Our trip wrapped up with a fun night of tying flies at @backpackersflyshop with the @ohiowomenonthefly crew and some of our Anchored members. Couldn’t have asked for a better group—the Midwest never disappoints.

I was resting against a tree during deer season when I received a message from my brother-in-law letting me know that my dear friend, Larry Solomon, had passed away in a tragic accident on the golf course. With the time difference, it had been both of our birthdays (Larry’s on April 9th, mine on the 10th). Feeling like I’d been punched in the gut, I lay down in the eucalyptus leaves and cried.

Larry’s daughter, Lauren, and I had met about five years earlier and stayed in touch here and there. I was happy to hear from her when she reached out and asked if we could arrange a trip to fish one of Larry’s favourite streams as a bit of a daughter’s memorial (Larry used to call me his doll—daughter of last life). It took a couple of years, but we finally made it happen. I met Lauren in NY, and with the help of the Dettes, we made it happen. I just know Larry was up there smiling, painting the skies with his distinct laughter as he watched us bond and share stories in the shop. Watching Lauren fall in love with fly fishing on the Beaverkill, just as her dad did, was something beautiful.

Cheers to Larry, endless gratitude to Lauren, and a heartfelt thanks to Craig, the Dettes, and Joan for making this all come together.

Between the full moon and the leaf showers, fall is in full swing. And it’s not alone. As a family, we swung up a few fish, caught a few critters, picked some yummy mushrooms, made a bunch of fireside meals, and made core memories with longtime friends. 🧡
