Katie Fiedler-Anderson has been guiding for 13 years. Based in Colorado, before becoming a fishing guide, she worked as a raft guide, video kayaker, rock climbing instructor, and high ropes instructor. Teaching and the outdoors is in her blood. A certified USCG Captain, Katie takes fly fishing everywhere she travels. She competes in the invite-only Women’s Tarpon Fly Fishing Tournament in the Florida Keys and also loves to reel in bass with her dad in Illinois.

As mom to daughter, Nixy, she’s no stranger to the adventure of taking a child to the river—or to the obstacles it brings. In this episode of Anchored, we discuss her short film, “Phoenix”, which tells a story of passion, as Katie and her husband take a leap of faith in order to inspire their 4-year-old daughter to chase her dreams.

There are outings, trips, and adventures… and then there are expeditions. Each has its time and place, but they’re often bound by the limits of money, responsibility, and age. Life has a way of offering opportunities to those who see their value yet recognize their consequences. A job that can’t be neglected, a relative that can’t be left, a body that won’t cooperate. Some say youth is wasted on the young; I say freedom is wasted on the free.

Raising a daughter, I’ve lost the privilege of carelessness, opting instead for family excursions or, as Charles puts it, trips that guarantee me “back home in one piece”. But I continue to crave the wild; need the expanse; pine for adventure. Regardless of the terrain, the all too familiar pull of the wild is always there—tempting me to go one step farther, to be unbridled and stealthy and focused… to revert to the 25-year old girl happily lost in the mountains.

It made sense to me one evening earlier this year. Down by the river and in the openness of the starry sky, I gave myself full permission to trust my instincts and to be my true self. As kiddo’s small, sweet voice crackled and glitched on the other end of my satellite phone, I threw sticks at approaching caiman, kept one ear open for rustling in the bushes, and the other for updates about how little “Harvey was a real pain on the bus at school today”. This is who I am… a slightly feral, fully in-tune mother with a passion for the wilderness and her offspring. I realised in that moment that I didn’t have to make a decision. Like the outdoorsmen and women before me, the wild will always be there waiting, because it never truly left me at all.

I’ve taken Adelaide on most adventures since she was born. Never have I seen her take to a place as much as she did Montana. She’s told me she’ll be moving there as soon as she’s old enough, and hasn’t stopped talking about our trip there last month. It seems no one is safe from the allure of the Big Sky.
